Sightlines and Risers: A Beginner's Guide for Community Theatre
Every community theatre eventually runs into the same problem: the hall you're performing in wasn't built as a theatre, the floor is flat, and somebody in the back row can't see past the head in front of them. Fixing that means building risers — stepped platforms that lift each row of seating a little higher than the one in front — and getting the height right is less about guesswork than most people assume.
What a sightline actually is
A sightline is simply the straight line from an audience member's eyes to the point on stage they need to see. When that line is blocked — usually by the head of the person sitting in front — you have a sightline problem. The fix is to raise the eye height of every row behind the first by enough that the line clears the head in front of it, all the way back to the last row in the house.
The tricky part is that "enough" isn't a fixed number. A flat floor with no risers at all works fine for two or three rows if everyone leans slightly to see between the person in front of them — audiences do this instinctively, and it's part of why small black-box spaces can get away with minimal risers. Once you're past four or five rows, though, the gaps compound, and somewhere near the back you get a row where nobody can see the stage floor at all.
The C-value: how much clearance is enough
Theatre designers use something called a C-value to define how much vertical clearance a sightline needs over the head of the person in front — typically somewhere between about 2 and 4 inches (50–100mm). Set it too low and the view still feels obstructed; set it too high and you end up building risers taller than they need to be, eating into your budget and your load-in time.
The height needed at each row isn't a simple, constant step. Because every row is farther from the stage than the one in front of it, a fixed vertical clearance over a nearer head translates into a smaller and smaller sightline gain the farther back you go — which is why the correct riser height actually increases row by row, not stays constant. This is the single most common mistake in DIY riser building: assuming "6 inches a row" will work all the way to the back, when the real requirement usually grows the farther back you go.
What you need to know before you calculate anything
Four numbers drive the whole calculation:
- The distance from the front row to your focal point — the point on stage you're designing the sightline around, usually the downstage floor or an actor's eye level.
- The spacing between rows — how far back each row sits from the one in front, measured horizontally.
- Seated eye height — roughly 3.5–4 feet (1.05–1.2m) for an average adult, though it's worth adjusting if you expect a lot of children or wheelchair users in certain rows.
- Your chosen clearance (C-value) — how much of a gap you want the sightline to keep above the head in front.

Practical building notes
A few things that trip up first-time riser builders:
- Focal point choice matters. If you design your sightlines around seeing an actor's face at standing eye level, seated or floor-level action will be much harder to see from the back — and vice versa. Pick whichever matters more for your show, or split the difference.
- Aisles change the math. A patron seated at the end of a row, with a clear diagonal view past the row in front, often doesn't need the same riser height as someone dead-center behind another seat. Most community venues don't bother calculating aisle seats separately, but it's worth knowing the numbers are conservative for those spots.
- Structural safety comes first. Whatever height your sightline math produces, make sure the platform itself is rated to carry the audience weight it'll actually hold, with guardrails wherever required by your venue's code. A calculator can tell you how tall to build; it can't tell you whether your lumber and bracing are strong enough to hold that height safely.
When risers aren't the answer
Sometimes the honest answer is that a flat-floor space simply can't seat as many rows as you'd like without staging the action higher instead. Raising the stage platform, or accepting a smaller house with a couple of rows removed, is often cheaper and safer than building risers tall enough to serve a deep, flat room. Run the numbers before you commit to a seating plan — it's a lot easier to change a chart on paper than to rebuild a platform after opening night.
