Riser and platform construction in particular has real safety and accessibility implications: verify any structural figure with a qualified builder or your venue’s code requirements before you build.

Results Are Rounded Estimates

The tools apply standard formulas and rules of thumb used in amateur and community theatre, and round their output for readability. That rounding, together with the assumptions of a deliberately simple model, means a displayed value may differ from what your specific venue, script, or fixture requires. Always confirm a result against your actual space and equipment.

Why a Result May Look Off

A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:

• Inputs describe an impossible or unusual figure: for example, a row spacing of zero, or a focal height greater than the eye height of the row in front.
• Units are mismatched: feet entered where a tool expects meters, or minutes where it expects pages, changes the answer entirely.
• The rule of thumb doesn’t fit your show:the page-a-minute runtime rule and the rehearsal-hour split are useful starting points, not guarantees — a dense two-hander and a musical with scene changes will diverge from the estimate differently.
