The Page-a-Minute Rule: Estimating Your Show's Runtime
Long before a show has ever been blocked, let alone rehearsed to performance pace, a director usually needs some estimate of how long it's going to run — for marketing copy, for a program, for deciding whether an intermission is needed at all. The tool most directors reach for is a decades-old rule of thumb: one page of standard-format script equals roughly one minute of stage time.
Where the rule comes from
The rule assumes a script formatted in the conventional way — roughly 12-point type, double-spaced dialogue, standard margins — which is more or less how professional and amateur scripts alike have been typeset for most of the last century. Under that formatting, a page holds roughly the amount of dialogue an actor speaks in about a minute at a natural conversational pace. It's not a law of physics; it's an empirical pattern that's held up well enough, across thousands of productions, that it became the default estimate directors reach for before a script is ever on its feet.
Using it for a rough estimate
The math is deliberately simple: multiply your total page count by your minutes-per-page figure (1, by default) to get an estimated acting time, then add whatever intermission time you're planning on top. A 90-page script comes out to roughly 90 minutes of acting time; add a single 15-minute intermission and you've got a 105-minute evening, roughly two acts most audiences will find comfortable.

When the rule breaks down
The page-a-minute rule is a reasonable average across dialogue-driven scripts, but it can drift noticeably for shows that don't fit that mold:
- Heavy stage direction. A page thick with physical action, choreography, or a scene change described in prose can take far longer to perform than a page of the same length filled with rapid dialogue exchange.
- Musical numbers. Songs rarely map cleanly onto the page-a-minute assumption at all, since a musical script's page count and its actual performed runtime are governed by very different rules than spoken dialogue.
- Deliberately slow or fast material. A script written for a contemplative, unhurried pace, or one written for rapid-fire farce dialogue, will consistently run slower or faster per page than the average the rule was built on.
- Inexperienced casts finding their rhythm. Early rehearsals of any show tend to run long as actors are still finding their pace and their marks; that's a rehearsal-process effect, not a flaw in the estimate itself, but it's worth remembering when comparing an early run-through's time to your page-based estimate.
A pace multiplier is the practical fix: if you already know or suspect your show runs slower or faster than the standard assumption — because of its genre, its density of stage direction, or simply because you've directed the playwright's other work before — scale the base estimate up or down accordingly rather than trusting the raw page count alone.
From estimate to measured fact
However useful the page-a-minute rule is for early planning, it should be treated exactly as what it is: a planning estimate, not a substitute for timing the real thing. Once your show is on its feet and running with any consistency, time it with a stopwatch, more than once, across different rehearsals. Runtimes tend to settle as a cast finds its final pace, and the number you eventually print in the program should always come from an actual timed run, not the original page-count estimate that got you started.
Used this way — as an early, honest approximation you plan to replace with a real measurement — the page-a-minute rule earns its long history in the rehearsal room. Used as a promise printed on a poster six weeks before a single line has been spoken aloud, it's asking more of a rule of thumb than it was ever built to deliver.
The rule, and its multiplier
The script runtime calculator applies a page a minute and adds intervals: 90 pages is 1 h 30; 120 pages with one interval is 2 h 15.
The pace multiplier is where real scripts get handled. Dense verse, heavy stage business, farce and anything with music run slow; rapid overlapping dialogue runs fast. The same 120 pages at 1.15 becomes 138 minutes of playing and 2 h 33 in total — eighteen minutes that decide whether the last bus works.
Calibrate the multiplier from your own read-through: time it, divide by pages, and expect the staged version to run longer.
What the page count never contains
Scene changes are the commonly forgotten cost — six changes at ninety seconds is nine minutes appearing in no page count. Curtain calls, latecomer holds and an interval that rarely matches its nominal fifteen minutes all sit outside the calculation too.
Venues generally want the full doors-to-curtain duration, so the figure to give them is the calculator's total plus changes plus a realistic interval — as a range until after the first full run.
