Blocking Notation That Survives a Handover
Blocking notes are useless if they cannot be read back three weeks later. The common failure is not laziness — it is that "moves left" and "crosses to the sofa" describe a picture the writer can still see and the reader cannot.
A grid gives you coordinates
The blocking grid generator divides a stage into addressable cells. A 30 ft by 20 ft stage at 2 ft cells produces a 15 by 10 grid — 150 cells, each labelled by its zone and position.
The zones follow standard stage geography: downstage, centre stage and upstage across the depth, and stage left, centre and stage right across the width — left and right always from the performer's point of view facing the audience, which is the convention that catches out everyone new to it.
The result is a label like DS1-SL3: a specific place, unambiguous to anyone reading the book.
Why coordinates beat description
Three practical gains.
They survive the set changing. "Crosses to the sofa" stops meaning anything when the sofa moves in week four. A grid reference does not.
They can be given to someone else. A stage manager taking over a book, a replacement cast member, or a revival next season can all read coordinates. Descriptions written for oneself rarely transfer.
They make the picture visible on paper. Plotting a scene's positions onto a grid shows up problems — everyone drifting to one side, a character stranded upstage for a page, a sightline blocked — that are hard to notice while directing.
Choosing a cell size
The default of 2 ft is fine for most work. Smaller cells give more precision and more cells to write, which stops being useful quickly — a grid fine enough to distinguish six inches is a grid nobody will use under time pressure.
For a large stage, or for chorus work where the useful unit is a group rather than a person, a coarser grid is better. The right size is the one where a single cell is about as precise as your blocking actually is.
Using it in rehearsal
Mark the grid on the rehearsal-room floor if you can — tape at the zone boundaries rather than every cell — so the notation and the room agree. Blocking recorded in a room whose proportions differ from the stage needs translating later, and translation is where blocking gets lost.
Record the position and the move that gets there, not just the destination. "DS1-SL3, cross from CS2-C on 'I never said that'" is a note that can be reconstructed; a bare coordinate is a snapshot without a path.
What it does not solve
A grid records blocking; it does not judge it. Whether a picture reads from the back row, whether an actor is masked, and whether a move motivates are directorial questions, and a coordinate system has no opinion on any of them.
It is also worth checking positions against actual sightlines rather than assuming the grid covers it — a cell that exists on paper may be invisible from the side seats, which is a matter for the sightline calculator and, more reliably, for walking the auditorium during a run.
Notation that survives a handover
A few conventions make a book readable by someone else. Record the coordinate, the cue line, and the character — all three, every time. Use a consistent abbreviation for each character and write the key at the front of the book.
Mark changes rather than overwriting them, and date them. A book with the original blocking crossed out and the new version dated is a record of the process; one that has been rubbed out and rewritten three times is a snapshot nobody can reason about.
Grids and the set
Once the set exists, the grid and the furniture need reconciling. The most useful step is to mark the set's footprint onto the grid plan — which cells are occupied, which are entrances, which are unusable.
That immediately shows where blocking has assumed floor that no longer exists, and it is far cheaper to find on paper than during a technical rehearsal.
Not just for the director
Coordinates are equally useful to lighting and to stage management. A lighting designer plotting specials wants to know where people actually stand, and a grid reference is a far better answer than "downstage-ish, left". Sharing the grid across departments is a small piece of standardisation that saves a surprising amount of technical-rehearsal time.
