Reading the tables
The error compounds.Each row’s required height depends on the row in front, so a small shortfall at row two is still there, slightly larger, at the back. That is why uniform risers fail progressively rather than all at once — rows two and three look fine and the back of the house does not.
Pitch and start distance both matter, in opposite directions. Tighter rows need taller risers because there is less horizontal distance to gain the angle. Seating that starts further from the stage needs gentler ones because the angles are shallower. A rake designed for one venue does not transfer to another, which is where reused rostra quietly lose their sightlines.
Geometry only.These figures say where floor levels need to be for people to see. They are not a build specification and say nothing about load rating, edge protection, bracing or how units are joined — all matters for a competent person and your venue’s rules. Why can't I build every riser the same height?
Because each row has to clear a head that is itself higher than the one in front, so the required step grows with distance. On the typical hall configuration the steps run 1.36 ft, then 1.43, then 1.48 — 20.6% taller by the back row. Build them all at the first figure and the back row's floor finishes 1.09 ft short.
Why do tighter rows need taller risers?
Counter-intuitive but consistent: less horizontal distance to gain the same sight angle means more vertical. The small studio at 3.5 ft pitch starting 10 ft out needs a much taller first step than the deeper house at 3 ft pitch starting 15 ft out, because the angles are steeper close to the stage.
What is the C-value?
The vertical clearance required over the head in front — the calculator defaults to 4 inches, a common working figure. Larger values give better sightlines and steeper, taller seating; smaller ones flatten the rake and compromise the back rows. If your venue has a house standard, use it.
Can I build from these numbers?
No. These are sightline geometry — where floor levels need to be for people to see. They are not a build specification. Load rating, edge protection, bracing and how rostra are joined are matters for someone competent in temporary structures and for your venue's own rules.
